House approves tribal gambling expansion
The House of Representatives advanced three bills Thursday that would allow certain Indian tribes to open or expand gambling operations on their land.
The Bangor Daily News reported lawmakers gave bipartisan approval to a bill that would allow the Houlton Band of Maliseets to advance a casino proposal in Aroostook County and a separate bill that would allow the Passamaquoddy Tribe to open a casino in Washington County. The casino proposal from the Houlton Band of Maliseets would still require approval by Aroostook County voters. Tribal representatives told lawmakers the proposals were to boost the local economy and continue a gaming tradition.
A third bill that cleared the House would allow the Penobscot National and the Aroostook Band of Micmacs to use electronic beano games instead of paper-and-ink versions that require a group of players to be present.
Lawmakers delayed voting on a fourth bill dealing that would allow Scarborough Downs to pursue a plan for a casino in Cumberland or York county.
