Gas companies look to spring build-out
The two natural gas companies installing pipeline in the Kennebec Valley plan to extend “backbone” pipelines installed last year through smaller lines to residential customers this spring.
The Kennebec Journal reported Maine Natural Gas has had crews working through the winter to connect commercial customers like the Bank of Maine Ice Vault. Summit Natural Gas of Maine plans to return its crews to work installing pipeline by mid-April.
Maine Natural Gas is building on a 21.4-mile backbone pipeline from Windsor to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta and Summit is adding to a 68-mile line from East Pittston to Madison.
A Summit spokesman told the newspaper the company plans to install another 85 miles of distribution pipeline between Augusta and Madison during the upcoming construction season, with possible connections to nearly 4,500 homes and 700 businesses. Maine Natural Gas said its pipelines will be in front of more than 500 businesses and homes, mostly in Augusta, this season.
