Bath Iron Works gets fifth destroyer deal

The Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works a $643 million contract option to add another Arleigh Burke-class destroyer to its previous $2.8 billion order of four ships.

Members of Maine’s congressional delegation said in statements Friday that the Navy formally issued the award to the Bath shipyard. The Portland Press Herald reported the shipyard has two of the five destroyers under construction. As part of the initial award, the Navy also ordered five destroyers from BIW competitor Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss.

Jim DeMartini, a spokesman for the shipyard, told the newspaper that the award for the fifth ship will allow BIW to maintain production levels and stabilize employment.
