Senate turns down tribal gaming bills
The Maine Senate has turned down six bills that would have expanded gambling in the state for Indian tribes and fraternal organizations.
The Bangor Daily News reported the Senate indefinitely postponed action on three bills that would have allowed the Houlton Band of Maliseets to advance a casino proposal in Aroostook County and another that would have allowed it and the Penobscot Nation, the Aroostook Band of Micmacs and the Passamaquoddy Tribe to use electronic beano games. A third bill would have allowed the Passamaquoddy Tribe to operate slot machines at a location in Washington County. Two others would have expanded gaming for fraternal organizations.
The bills cleared the House earlier this month.
The newspaper reported senators on both sides of the aisle voted to postpone consideration of the bills indefinitely, citing the state’s lack of a statewide gaming policy or plan.
