Cavendish suspends Presque Isle potato planting
Cavendish Farms has suspended potato planting at its Presque Isle farmland, cutting 13 jobs and delaying a $2.7 million potato storage investment in a move the J.D. Irving Ltd. subsidiary attributed to unfavorable market conditions.
The Bangor Daily News reported the company’s 3,000 to 5,000 acres could be out of production this year, unless Cavendish allows other growers to rent the land for planting. Mary Keith, a spokeswoman for J.D. Irving, told the newspaper that the company plans to hold onto the land should the market conditions for potato farming improve.
The newspaper reported the move means a loss of three full-time jobs, five full-time seasonal jobs and five short-term seasonal jobs.
