Navy bids farewell to USS Miami in Kittery ceremony

The U.S. Navy will next year ship the arson-damaged nuclear submarine, the USS Miami, from Kittery to a scrap yard in Washington state, a process started by the vessel’s deactivation ceremony at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Friday.

The Associated Press reported Navy officials celebrated the submarine’s service during the ceremony. Its service was cut short when a shipyard employee set it on fire, causing $700 million in damage. The Navy decided last August to halt plans to repair the submarine, citing federal budget cuts and repair costs that exceeded original estimates.

The AP reported shipyard workers will remove nuclear fuel for shipment to a federal repository in Idaho and then make enough repairs to tow the submarine to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Washington state to be cut up for scrap. The AP reported the estimated cost of the ship’s inactivation is $54 million.
