Flood risk above normal as winter cold persists
State officials said the risk of flooding this spring remains higher than normal as the late arrival of warmer temperatures likely signals a quick thaw to come.
The Kennebec Journal reported Greg Stewart, data section chief for the U.S. Geological Survey, said the flood potential is “significantly above normal” with winter weather’s farewell about three weeks behind schedule. That’s left the state with more snowpack than usual, especially in the northern parts of the state.
If that thaw combines with rain, officials said rivers and streams may flood throughout the state, including the Androscoggin and Kennebec rivers.
Two storms headed to Maine this weekend and early next week are expected to combine with persistent cold temperatures to add to the existing snowpack.
