Solar power advocates rally against CMP rate plan
The Kennebec Journal reported around two dozen solar power advocates rallied outside of the Maine Public Utility Commission’s office Wednesday to protest proposed changes to Central Maine Power Co.’s fee structure, which would include a new charge for its customers with any form of on-site power generation.
The protests came before the first public hearing on the plan that company officials earlier told Mainebiz would help make up for declining revenues from its usage charges related to a trend of decreasing electricity consumption.
In a major departure from the rate structure of its previous five-year agreements, the utility's proposed rate plan would base the distribution portion of monthly customer bills on a percentage of its fixed costs. The rest of its fixed costs would be covered by the new charge.
State officials are scheduled to hold a second public hearing on the proposed rate case Thursday at 7 p.m. at the University of Southern Maine.
If approved as proposed, the company’s new rate plan would take effect July 1.
