Snafu doesn't allow restaurants in downtown Bangor

Bangor city councilors are scrambling to rectify a land use technicality in which restaurants aren’t listed among the permitted uses in the Downtown Development District under the city’s land use code.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the oversight came to light during a review of the city’s codes to make sure they complied with state definitions. City attorneys discovered that restaurants apparently were overlooked as a conditional use during multiple revisions of the city’s land use code.

City councilors will be sending a code amendment to the planning board that will add restaurants to taverns, bars and lounges as conditional permitted uses downtown. Action by the planning board is expected on May 20, the newspaper reported.
