Bowdoin College president to step down in 2015

Bowdoin College President Barry Mills announced Monday that he will step down in June 2015 at the conclusion of his 14th year as head of Maine’s oldest college.

Mills, 63, who was a deputy presiding partner of Debevoise & Plimpton in New York City, one of the nation’s top international law firms, prior to his arrival at Bowdoin in 2001, stated in a press release that he will seek another “professional challenge” after he finishes as the college’s leader.

In a separate message to students, faculty, and staff, the chairwoman of Bowdoin’s Board of Trustees, Deborah Jensen Barker, said a search committee to find Mills’ successor would be named in May and will include representatives from Bowdoin’s faculty, staff, alumni and student body.

Mills was inaugurated as Bowdoin's 14th president in October 2001 as the college was beginning its 200th academic year. His tenure as president is marked by the college’s efforts to expand diversity among students and employees, major expansions and renovations at the Brunswick campus such as the expansion of the college’s museum of art and the creation of the Studzinski Recital Center, construction of new residence halls, a new health and fitness center and the new Sidney J. Watson Ice Arena.

The college’s endowment has continued to grow, having more than doubled in value since 2011. Mills also successfully led “The Bowdoin Campaign,” a five-year fundraising effort that concluded in June 2009 and exceeded its goal of $250 million, enabling the college to add faculty and improve students’ access to financial aid.
