Brunswick inn changes name

The Inn at Brunswick Station in Brunswick will change its name to The Brunswick Hotel and Tavern after a federal court in February ruled that its existing name too closely resembled that of its nearby competitor, The Brunswick Inn.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the change is underway as part of the U.S. District Court’s Feb. 4 order for the inn to “permanently cease” using The Inn at Brunswick Station name no later than May 5. The court had also ordered that the inn couldn’t use both the words “Brunswick” and “inn” in its new name.

Previously, in December 2013, The Brunswick Inn was awarded $10,000 after a jury determined The Inn at Brunswick Station’s name was infringing on its trademark for “The Brunswick Inn,” which was obtained before the owner filed the lawsuit in March 2012.

The Inn at Brunswick Station, located near Brunswick Station that services the Amtrak Downeaster passenger rail service, opened in 2011 as part of an economic development plan to revitalize the site for the town’s former train station. The Brunswick Inn opened in 1984 and began using its current name in 2007.
