MaineCare rides contracts given to Atlanta firm
The state has chosen to an Atlanta firm to provide MaineCare transportation services in four regions, leaving behind a Connecticut company that was deeply criticized last year.
The Portland Press Herald reported that LogistiCare, a company once criticized for its work in York County, won $23.6 million in contracts from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. The Atlanta provider will cover four regions that include Androscoggin, Aroostook, Cumberland, Franklin, Hancock, Oxford and Washington counties.
LogistiCare faced criticism in 2013 for providing sometimes unreliable service to patients in York County, but the DHHS found it had made significant improvements by the end of the year.
Penquis Community Action Program won a $6.4 contract to cover Kennebec and Somerset counties. Waldo Community Action program won a $3.8 million contract to cover Lincoln, Knox, Sagadahoc and Waldo counties. Regions covering Penobscot, Piscataquis and York counties and parts of Oxford County were not up for bid this year.
Coordinated Transportation Solutions, the firm that lost its chance to renew $28.3 million in contracts after repeatedly providing unreliable service, didn’t win any contracts. The Connecticut firm was seeking to cover six of Maine’s regions that were open to bid.
The MaineRides program will cost the state $46 million for 2014-2015, about $6 million more than the current year. The increase was attributed to higher bids from winning contractors.
