Old Port Fest sets focus on working waterfront
Portland’s working waterfront will be a major focus for this year’s Old Port Festival.
The Portland Press Herald reported that 11 wharves off Commercial Street will be open to the public on Saturday, June 7, the second day of the festival’s newly expanded three-day lineup.
The wharves, many of which are privately owned, will provide festival goers an opportunity to see the inner workings of lobster and fish processing plants and boat maintenance facilities. There will also be a chance for visitors to try on a diving suit at a dive shop.
Steve Hewins, executive director of Portland’s Downtown District, at a Monday press conference said Saturday's events will give the public a chance to see the “real Portland,” adding that “the waterfront is a part of the city that a lot of people walk right past, but has so much to offer.”
