$50M wind project gets initial OK from state

Construction on an eight-turbine, nearly $50 million wind project on Canton Mountain could begin later this year after it received draft approval by the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The Sun Journal reported the Oxford County project by Massachusetts-based Patriot Renewables LLC could go online by 2016 if the DEP grants final approval.

Each turbine would provide the town of Canton with $4,000 in taxes annually, increasing its tax base by nearly $50 million, according to a fact sheet.

The DEP is accepting public comment on DEP's draft order until 5 p.m. on May 19.

Patriot Renewables wants to build similar wind projects in the neighboring towns of Dixfield and Carthage.

Correction: Previous versions of this story incorrectly stated the project had received final approval from the DEP and that there were moratoriums placed on wind projects in Dixfield and Carthage. These were reporting errors from the Sun Journal.
