Potato plant's $7.5M expansion good news for industry
Naturally Potatoes, one of Maine’s largest potato processing companies, is planning a $7.5 million expansion to increase its production by 25% next year.
The Portland Press Herald reported the company plans to produce 40 million pounds of potatoes this year, with 50 million expected next year. With the expansion, the company said, production could reach approximately 90 million within five years.
Don Flannery, executive director of the Maine Potato Board, told the newspaper Naturally Potatoes’ expansion will help balance some of the loss from McCain Foods, one of the state’s other potato processors, which made deep cuts in its contract with growers this year.
