Maine hospitals tout cost-effectiveness
Maine has spent 17% less on Medicare expenditures per capita than the national average — a new figure among others local hospitals are using to tout their cost effectiveness.
The figure come from a large dataset released by the federal Medicare office that focuses on health care costs and outcomes from across the country, the Bangor Daily News reported.
The Maine Hospital Association said the Medicare data shows the state is a “good provider” on a “cost basis in Medicare,” pointing to other figures, like one that says Maine’s inpatient hospital care expenditures are 20% under the national average.
However, Nancy Morris, a spokeswoman for Maine Health Management Coalition, told the newspaper the results should be considered in light of the country’s worldwide standing for overall performance. She said the United States has a low bar for healthcare, noting that the country ranks 37th in overall performance according to the World Health Organization.
