L-A's only Alpine ski hill could close

Lost Valley, Lewiston-Auburn’s only Alpine ski resort that has experienced ongoing budget issues, could close before next season unless it receives financial assistance.

Lincoln Hayes, one of the co-owners, told the Sun Journal that he is considering a possible sale of the resort, among other financial solutions. The company, which will continue to host banquets and other functions at the resort's base lodge, is working with the Auburn Ski Association and city officials on how to move forward.

Hayes said he and co-owner Connie King could no longer invest more money in the resort.

The newspaper reported the ski operation has not been able to break even or make a profit since Hayes and King bought it 10 years ago. Hayes said the company has ended every year with a nearly $200,000 deficit.

Lost Valley, which first opened in 1961, has served as the home for the Edward Little High School ski team. It has also served as a training ground for Olympic and World Cup athletes.

The article was updated to clarify that Lost Valley will continue to host events.
