$100K awarded to promote bio-based manufacturing
The Environmental Health Strategy Center has received a $100,000 grant to develop and promote bio-based manufacturing in Maine as part of its “Plants to Products” initiative.
The nonprofit group received the grant from the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation this week, according to a press release.
The release characterized the grant as an effort to create new jobs and revitalize Maine’s rural communities by growing the bio-based manufacturing sector, which involves converting sustainably harvested wood chips and agricultural waste into advanced biofuels, bio-based plastics and renewable chemicals.
The Environmental Health Strategy Center, which has offices in Portland and Bangor, is working on the initiative with Biobased Maine, a trade association formerly known as the Sustainable Bioplastics Council of Maine, the University of Maine and other stakeholder groups.
Old Town Fuel and Fiber is expected to open its bio-based manufacturing plant later this year, which the Environmental Health Strategy Center said is a critical first step in developing the budding manufacturing sector.
