Two firms get $321K to boost local food efforts

Two Maine organizations are receiving a total of $321,500 in federal grants to boost local food efforts, including one expected to create 20 jobs and assist eight businesses.

The Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce in York and CEI (formerly known as Coastal Enterprises Inc.) in Wiscasset received the funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development office, the agency announced today.

CEI, a nonprofit financial institution, has received $86,500 to help small and emerging private farm and food infrastructure businesses grow in Aroostook, Franklin, Oxford, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset and Washington counties. The assistance program is expected to create 20 new jobs and support eight businesses.

The York chamber has received a $235,000 community loan to help it purchase two acres of land to expand York’s farmers’ market.
