DeLorme expected to appeal $6.2M fine

DeLorme Publishing, the Yarmouth-based company that makes the Maine Atlas and Gazetteer, is expected to appeal a $6.2 million fine related to a patent infringement case.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the company is being fined after the U.S. International Trade Commission issued a ruling on Monday that found the company had breached a consent agreement with BriarTek, a Virginia-based technology company. The fine is far more than the $675,000 that had been recommended by a judge earlier this year.

DeLorme faces the penalty after the commision found it had been selling and importing its inReach satellite communication devices, which infringes upon a satellite communications patent held by BriarTek. The commission said in selling the devices within the United States, DeLorme violated its consent agreement with the company

An attorney for DeLorme told the newspaper the company will appeal the ruling.
