Nursing home faces fines, possible closure
Penobscot Nursing Home is facing fines of more than $19,000 and possible closure after a federal agency said it will revoke Medicare and Medicaid certifications if several deficiencies aren't addressed by the end of the month.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the nursing home was informed of the fines and possible closure in a June 11 letter from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which could force its 31 residents to find a new home.
J. William Roberson, associate regional administrator of the federal agency, said in the letter that termination of the nursing home's certifications could be prevented if it sends a plan of correction to state officials by June 16. Otherwise, the nursing home would have to develop a closure plan and notify all residents.
Janice McManus-Rackliff, the nursing home's administrator, said in a statement that her staff is working diligently to address the deficiencies, which include several substandard practices and conditions .
