Popular Machias restaurant burns down

A Machias restaurant known for its famous blueberry pie burned down Friday morning.

The Bangor Daily News reported that a fire at Helen’s Restaurant was reported at 1:45 a.m. today. The restaurant’s owners posted on its Facebook page an image of the fire, saying no one was in the building at the time. The cause is unknown.

The Maine Department of Labor said in a statement that its Rapid Response team has contacted the restaurant’s owners to help employees review benefits they may be entitled to receive.

Gov. Paul LePage in a statement called Helen’s a “Maine landmark.”

“Open year-round, the restaurant is also a local institution and gathering place,” he said. “This is a true loss for the owners, David and Julie Barker, as well as the Down East community.”

Helen’s, which opened in 1950 on 111 Main St., has been recognized by Life magazine, Rachel Ray’s magazine and Parade magazine for its blueberry pie.
