Report to reveal earnings for Maine college grads

A upcoming database will reveal what recent Maine college graduates have earned — a move that state officials hope will encourage prospective students to make more informed choices when choosing a major and how much college debt they can afford.

The Associated Press reported that the new database will come out next month and share first-year earnings information of graduates between 2009 and 2011, by major. The database,  which was been developed over three years between the state’s Education and Labor departments, only includes earnings information for graduates who work in Maine.

John Dorrer, program director for the Jobs for the Future’s Building Economic Opportunity Group and former acting commissioner of Maine’s Department of Labor, told the AP that concerns over crippling college debt were a driving force for the new database.

A recent study by the Maine Development Foundation showed that a college education can pay off over time, as reported by Mainebiz. But Maine’s public universities continue to face severe financial issues, in part stemming from the state’s decreased funding for education.
