Rockland moratorium on building height moves forward

Rockland’s proposed six-month moratorium on building developments over 50 feet tall is moving forward after it received initial approval from the City Council.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the council voted 3-2 on the moratorium, which would impact future developments within a downtown section of Rockland. The council will consider final approval of the moratorium on Aug. 11.

The moratorium was prompted by the Rockland Planning Board’s approval of a five-story hotel proposed by ADZ Properties that would stand 57 feet, a few feet under the city’s current 65-foot building limit. If approved, the moratorium wouldn’t impact the hotel project, the BDN noted, but it could have an impact on other projects.

The newspaper noted that the moratorium is being sought to allow officials to discuss any rule changes for the city’s current limit on building height. The height of the five-story hotel has prompted concerns by neighbors who said it would be too big, among other issues.
