Maine unemployment down to 5.5% in June

Maine’s unemployment rate in June was 5.5%, a slight decrease from 5.7% in May and a larger dip from 6.7% in the same month last year. It was also below the national rate.

The Maine Department of Labor released the latest figures for the preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate on Friday, saying the number of unemployed Mainers declined by 8,200 to 39,000 last month.

The national unemployment rate in June was 6.1%, a decrease from 6.3% in May and from 7.5% in the same month last year. The average unemployment rate for New England in June was 5.7%, with Vermont at the lowest with 3.5% and Rhode Island at the highest with 7.9%.
