Portland civic center GM retiring

Steve Crane is stepping down as general manager of the Cumberland County Civic Center, now known as the Cross Insurance Arena, after 36 years on the job.

The Portland Daily Sun reported that Crane began his job as general manager in 1978 and has overseen the arena’s operations over 5,416 events during the span of his career.

He told the newspaper he decided to retire after several recent goals were completed, including the completion of the arena’s $33 million renovation project, the signing of a new five-year lease with the Portland Pirates and the approval of a $2.5 million naming rights deal with Bangor-based Cross Insurance earlier this year. "It seemed like the perfect opportunity to step aside rather than waiting until we got busy with something else,” he told the Daily Sun.
