FairPoint unions authorize strike

FairPoint Communications could be facing a strike from 2,000 employees after several unions voted on Saturday to authorize such action against the company.

The Portland Press Herald reported that members of the Communications Workers of America, Local 1400 and several other unions overwhelmingly voted in support of the strike authorization, which gives union leaders the green light to call strikes in the future.

Unions have been in contract negotiations with FairPoint since April, but have not yet reached an agreement. Worker contracts are currently set to expire on Aug. 2.

Among the union's concerns are the company's desire to continue hiring outside help without union approval and the company's request for $67.7 million from Maine state appropriations to help pay for rural landline service, according to the Bangor Daily News.

In a company statement, FairPoint said, “The outcome is not a surprise since this strike authorization vote is a part of their process. As any prudent company would, we have plans to ensure our services to our customers continue without interruption in the event of one."
