Portland Jetport one of nation's most affordable

The Portland International Jetport (PWM) has been ranked the 13th most affordable airport in the country, beating others in northern New England, according to a new report.

The Fifth Annual Airport Affordability Index announced by Cheapflights.com on Thursday ranked Portland out of 101 airports across the county, based on average airfare prices found during last month in searches for popular domestic and international destinations.

The report found that Portland International Jetport’s average airfare this year was $308, a nearly 22% decrease from $394 in 2011, though it has been known to fluctuate in the past.

"Exploring flight options can be tedious and time consuming at times," Paul Bradbury, the jetport’s director, said in a prepared statement. "This study reinforces the Jetport as not only the most convenient, but the most affordable for local travelers.”

The Portland International Jetport saw a 3.7% increase in passengers in 2013 over the previous year, which marked an end to a four-year period of declining passengers.
