New bridge links Fort Kent and New Brunswick
The new $13.9 million Clair-Fort Kent International Bridge has opened, with officials from both Maine and New Brunswick describing it as an important link for economic opportunity between the state and Canadian province.
According to the St. John Valley Times, the new bridge that links U.S. Route 1 and Maine Route 161 with New Brunswick Route 161 was completed two months ahead of schedule. The project began in the spring of 2012.
The United States and Canada are co-owners of the new bridge, with construction and maintenance costs being shared equally by Maine and New Brunswick, the newspaper reported.
“This new infrastructure supports trade, tourism and business in the region, while also serving commuters who are visiting friends and relatives on both sides of the border,” New Brunswick Premier David Alward said in a press release.
Daily traffic on the bridge averages more than 1,000 cars and 45 trucks, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.
A contract for the demolition of the old bridge calls for the old structure to be completely removed by June 30, 2015, according to MDOT.
