Large protest expected for Market Basket in Mass.

Workers are turning out in force for a rally near Market Basket’s headquarters in Tewksbury, Mass., Tuesday, to demand that former company President Arthur T. Demoulas be reinstated.

The Boston Globe said strong turnout was expected, while some Maine radio stations reported the crowd already was causing traffic jams during rush hour. Market Basket has a store in Biddeford.

A section of the parking lot outside the Market Basket story at the Stadium Plaza shopping center in Tewksbury was cordoned off for the protesters. The event is slated to start at 11 a.m., the Globe noted.

This is the fourth major protest. Organizers have said they expect 15,000 protesters, the newspaper said.

On Monday, some employees expressed concern about how long the protests could continue, the paper said, and some warehouse workers and drivers who have remained out of work indicated their resolve, or savings, could run out in days or weeks.

The workers last week were given an ultimatum by current management to return to work by Monday, Aug. 4, or lose their jobs.
