Brunswick Executive Airport lands $1.36M in fed grants
Brunswick Executive Airport will be receiving three federal grants totaling $1.36 million from the federal Department of Transportation to pay for several improvements to airport facilities at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station.
In a press release announcing the awards, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) identified the following projects that would be funded by the federal grants:
• $182,088 for rehabilitating the terminal building’s roof
• $748,818 for improving drainage
• $433,224 for a fire protection system in one of the facility’s buildings.
“Brunswick Executive Airport is a critical piece in the redevelopment of the former Navy base. Having the facility nearby is a draw to the innovative businesses that have come to Brunswick Landing and the area,” said Pingree. “I’m excited that the airport will be able to make these improvements so it can continue to establish itself as a state-of-the-art facility.”
The Times Record reported that the terminal building is home to FlightLevel Aviation, the airport’s fixed base operator. It also is the headquarters for Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, which oversees the redevelopment of the former base, and the home of Maine Coastal Flight, which offers flight training and other services at the airport.
MRRA Executive Director Steve Levesque told the Brunswick newspaper that the $433,224 in fire protection improvements will go to Building 295, which houses the fire suppression systems for the airport's hangars and is in need of updating.
