Feds to require state to repay Riverview money
A regional administrator for the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has told the Portland Press Herald that Maine will be required to repay the federal government millions of dollars that it has used to run Riverview Psychiatric Center during the past year.
“We will be seeking the return of that money because the facility has been decertified,” Richard McGreal, CMS’s associate regional administrator, told the newspaper, referring to the action taken by Medicaid last September after determining the Augusta hospital failed to meet minimum patient safety standards.
McGreal said his office is preparing a formal disallowance letter to Maine stipulating that the state must pay back federal money dating to September 2013 and forbidding the state from accessing future federal money for the psychiatric center unless Riverview regains its certification, the newspaper reported.
Although federal funding would resume if Riverview becomes re-certified, McGreal told the newspaper the center would not be funded retroactively and the state would still owe the federal government money it has used in the months Riverview was ineligible.
State officials told the PPH they have not been told about the pending disallowance action.
