No change in Maine unemployment from June to July

The Maine unemployment rate in July was 5.5%, remaining unchanged from the previous month but a major dip from the 6.7% reported for the same month last year.

The state Department of Labor released new labor figures on Monday, showing that Maine’s unemployed decreased by 8,700, to 38,800, in July. The figures are seasonally adjusted.

The U.S. unemployment rate was 6.2% in July, a slight increase from 6.1% for the previous month and a larger decrease from 7.4% in the same month last year.  The average unemployment rate for New England in July was 5.8%, with Vermont having the smallest rate at 3.7% and Rhode Island the largest at 7.7%.

The preliminary estimate for nonfarm payroll jobs for July was 610,000, a 1.1% increase over the same month last year. Private sector jobs increased by 1.6% to 510,900 over the same 12-month period, while government jobs decreased by 1.2% to 99,200.
