Largest U.S. dollar store chain expanding to Maine

Dollar General Corp. is set to begin construction on its first-ever Maine location, just after the country’s largest dollar store chain made a counteroffer to buy competitor Family Dollar.

The Morning Sentinel reported Dollar General is expected to begin construction on its  $750,000 store in Oakland soon, with another store planned for Lewiston. The new stores are part of Dollar General’s expansion plan for Maine, Rhode Island and Oregon.

After competitor Family Dollar agreed to be sold to national chain Dollar Tree Inc. for an offer valued at $8.5 billion, Dollar General made a counteroffer this week valued at $9.7 billion.

Family Dollar and Dollar Tree have multiple stores in Maine, with the former company having recently announced new locations in the Lewiston-Auburn area.
