Rockport boatbuilder faces ‘crippling’ DEP fine

Artisan Boatworks, a Rockport-based boatbuilder, is facing what it called a “crippling” fine from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection that will set it back several years.

The Camden Herald reported that Artisan was fined $8,750 for improperly handling hazardous waste after recently reaching a consent agreement with the DEP, which involved taking corrective action and agreeing to a payment schedule.

Artisan received multiple penalties for the transferring of used oil and paint thinner, including “failing to determine” that they were hazardous and failing to properly handle the substances,” the DEP said its July 2014 enforcement report that was released last week.

Alec Brainerd, the company’s founder and president, told the newspaper the company has “always taken a lot of pride in [its] compliance,” but called the fine fair. He added that the fine will create a major setback for the company.
