UMaine System loses fourth president this year

University of Maine at Machias President Cynthia Huggins will become the state university system’s fourth president to step down within the last three months.

Huggins announced on Thursday that she will retire by the end of the year, the Bangor Daily News reported. The school has not yet named an interim leader.

Huggins’s retirement announcement follows recent departures by presidents at UMaine Augusta, UMaine and the University of Southern Maine. Three other UMaine System administrators either have already left or have announced their intentions to do so.

Huggins announced her forthcoming retirement to faculty and staff Thursday morning. She said she is retiring because she has served for 10 years, noting that the “symbolism of that is important,” and because she wants to further pursue her love of writing.

James Moreira, president of the school’s Faculty Senate, told the BDN that Huggins’s announcement came as a “complete surprise to some people.”
