Hospice expansion reflects growing need for services

Hospice of Southern Maine is planning to build a new, expanded facility in Scarborough that will replace its existing one and help address a growing need for its services.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the hospice nonprofit recently purchase eight acres on Route 1 in Scarborough. Hospice of Southern Maine is planning to raise about $5.5 million to build the expanded facility, which will replace its current building located down the road.

The newspaper noted that the hospice nonprofit’s plan to expand its end-of-life and medical care services reflects Maine’s continually aging population. With a median age of 43.5, the oldest in the country, the state has the second highest proportion of people 65 and older.
