Sappi's Skowhegan mill seeks larger tax break

Sappi Fine Paper North America executives are seeking a lower tax valuation for their paper mill in Skowhegan after town assessors reduced it by nearly $100 million this week.

The Morning Sentinel reported that the town of Skowhegan is expecting a potential legal challenge from Sappi in light of the contested valuation. But the company has the option of filing a tax abatement first.

The town's Board of Assessors set the mill's value at just above $463 million, a decrease from its last assessment of $567 million. The new valuation will have Sappi pay $7.94 million in taxes to the town, as opposed to the $9.3 million it paid last year.

Mark Hittie, a Sappi spokesman, told the Morning Sentinel that the company hopes to reach an appropriate settlement on what he called an "overvaluation” of the mill.

"A fair valuation is necessary for Sappi’s Skowhegan mill to compete nationally and globally in this very challenging industry," he said.
