Virginia economic development firm to aid Millinocket

Economic development firms in Alexandria, Va., and Bangor are offering free services to Millinocket as a way to help dig the town out of its economic troubles.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Alexandria-based CZB Associates has contacted Millinocket Town Manager Peggy Daigle to provide economic analysis and planning services. An unnamed Bangor firm also has offered pro bono assistance.

Daigle said at a Thursday Town Council meeting that successfully firms like CZB Associates often seek to help ailing communities in order to elevate them. But four town councilors said they are skeptical about an outside firm coming in to offer free services.

The towns of Millinocket and East Millinocket have been under extreme financial pressure in part because of issues faced by New Hampshire-based investment firm Cate Street Capital and its efforts to restart an East Millinocket mill and launch a wood pellet mill in Millinocket.
