LePage pulls out of energy forum

Gov. Paul LePage abruptly pulled out of an energy forum Friday morning that was supposed to be the first event to feature all three of Maine’s gubernatorial candidates.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Jeff Marks, lead organizer of E2Tech’s energy forum, said he was informed early Friday morning by LePage’s campaign that he would not attend the event as scheduled because of a misunderstanding about the event’s format. Independent Eliot Cutler and Democrat Mike Michaud, who has previously stated that he wouldn’t attend debate events without LePage, were both present and spoke on energy issues for 30 minutes each.

LePage’s campaign spokesman, Alex Willette, said in a statement later in the morning that “staff at [the E2Tech] event today attempted to arrange a setting to put politics ahead of policy; in a format inconsistent with the policy discussion that had been agreed upon.”

Marks, E2Tech’s executive director, told the BDN that he was hoping for the event’s 275 attendees to hear all three candidates’ thoughts on energy and heating issues.
