Student housing owner 'angry' at Orono officials

An out-of-state property management company that owns student housing in Orono is “very angry” at the town’s efforts to enforce large, out-of-control parties attended by University of Maine students.

That’s how Orono Town Manager Sophie Wilson described the situation at a Monday Town Council meeting, the Bangor Daily News reported. The town has had a creaky relationship with North Carolina-based Campus Crest Communities, which owns The Grove student apartment complex, since it opened near the UMaine Orono campus in 2012 because of various code enforcement issues and loud parties that draw up to 400 students.

Most recently, a team of police officers from multiple towns broke up a party attended by up to 400 people, mostly UMaine students, on Sept. 6 after receiving multiple complaints. Police arrested three people, and one officer suffered a fractured leg during a melee. The Grove has also received multiple code violations, resulting in fines up to $650,000.

As a result, Orono town councilors are mulling tougher rules for disorderly properties, with plans to enact them by December, the newspaper noted.
