EMHS to cut more than 40 IT jobs

Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems is planning to cut 43 positions in its information technology department, though employees may be reassigned to new jobs within the system.

The Bangor Daily News reported that elimination of IT positions, which would represent about 12% of the department’s 360 employees, is one of the efforts by the Brewer-based health care system to overhaul its structure and prevent a $100 million deficit by 2019. Fifteen of the 43 positions marked for elimination are currently vacant, the newspaper noted.

EMHS first announced its intention to overhaul operations in fall 2013, with the goal of “reinventing” how it provides health care  and improves its services and business functions. The health care system in March said it had a $7 million shortfall, citing shrinking government reimbursements, a decrease in patients and an increase in unpaid care.
