Historic Portland property sells for reduced price

The front portion of the historic Masonic Temple at 415 Congress St. in Portland was sold in an auction Thursday for $1.6 million, nearly half of what its previous owner was hoping to receive.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Heather Ashby, who runs a real estate firm with her husband, Sheldon Ashby, was the winning bidder out of the less than 10 bidders present.

Kevin Mattson, president of Dirigo Capital Advisors, previously told the newspaper that he was hoping to receive more than $3 million for the property.

The property — which contains approximately 49,494 square feet of office space, some of which is occupied — was previously sold for $3 million in 2004 and for $1.5 million in 1996. The building’s assessed value  is nearly $3.5 million, according to the city assessor’s office.
