Portland biotech firm sues Cooke Aquaculture

A Portland-based biotechnology firm is suing New Brunswick-based Cooke Aquaculture and affiliated businesses over four alleged patent infringements.

The Bangor Daily News reported that MariCal Inc. and two other companies, Norway-based Europharma AS and a subsidiary, British Columbia-based Europharma Inc., filed the lawsuit last week in U.S. District Court in Bangor, seeking unspecified damages.

The lawsuit alleges that Cooke Aquaculture, which has a location that reopened in Machiasport last month, is infringing on four patents for technology developed by MariCal that increases the sensory abilities of fish and has helped boost commercial salmon production. Europharma AS holds the exclusive license for the patents while Europharma Inc. is a sublicensee. Cooke Aquaculture had been granted a license for the patented technology that expired in 2008.
