Maine oil exports sharply decline

Crude oil shipments through the Portland-Montreal Pipe Line has sharply declined in the past four years, creating concerns about the health of the state’s cleanup fund.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the pipeline’s 3-cent-per-barrel contribution to the state’s Surface Oil Clean-up Fund has decreased from $3 million in 2010 to $1.6 million in 2013. The pipeline is the largest contributor of the fund, which helps pay for cleanup services and other expenses if there ever is a spill.

Jamie Py, executive director of the Maine Energy Marketers Association, told the newspaper he is concerned the cleanup fund could deplete if the pipeline doesn’t increase shipments. He said the fund’s board is considering a merger with the Groundwater Oil Clean-up Fund, which also has seen a decline in revenue over the past few years.
