Job outlook uncertain for Portland IT Firm
Unified Technologies, a Portland-based IT firm, may cut an undetermined amount of positions and will lose its name after being acquired by a company based in Waltham, Mass.
At the same time, however, a spin-off company led by a principal at Unified Technologies is expected to create up to six new jobs.
Cloud-based communications firm DSCI announced its acquisition of Unified Technologies on Tuesday. Financial details of the transaction, which closed on Oct. 1, are not being disclosed.
Stacey Corbin, a spokeswoman for DSCI, confirmed with Mainebiz that some positions at Unified Technologies may be cut as a result, though it’s currently unclear how many. She said that all of the employees at the Portland firm have been informed.
The reason, Corbin said, is that the acquisition has created some overlap between the two companies.
"DSCI is fully committed to helping [any affected workers] with finding new jobs," she said.
It’s unclear if any employees will be impacted at Unified Technologies’ Manchester, N.H. office, which is located in the same building as DSCI’s operations center.
Unified Technologies will also lose its name and become a part of DSCI, Corbin said, and the company will remain at its 212 Canco Road location, at least for now.
Before Corbin confirmed the changes, Todd Wolf, a principal at Unified Technologies, told Mainebiz that the company has created a spin-off company, Wolf Technology Group, that will serve as the master sales agent for DSCI. He said some Unified Technologies employees have moved to Wolf Technology and between the two, there are around 40 employees total.
Wolf said Wolf Technology is planning to hire up to a total of six salespeople and network engineers immediately as a result of the acquisition.
However, Wolf did not mention at the time that pending job cuts could be coming to Unified Technologies. He was not available when reached for comment Wednesday evening.
DSCI said service for Unified Technologies’ existing customers will not change, but it will “now take advantage of DSCI’s suite of hosted communications and connectivity services.”
Larry Cushing, CEO of Unified Technologies, said in a prepared statement that "joining DSCI gives us the means to considerably expand and enhance the services we offer to our clients."
“They will now benefit from a full range of solutions addressing every aspect of their IT infrastructure, from unified communications to remote data backup," he added. "Most importantly, DSCI is well-known for providing excellent customer service — in fact, their customer focus was a significant factor in our decision.”
Unified Technologies was formed in 2010 as a result of a merger between TelLan Network Technologies Inc. and ITPartners, doing business as VoIPnet Technologies, according to a 2011 story in the New Hampshire Union Leader.
