Online British pharmacy opens in Maine

The Great British Drugstore has become the first United Kingdom-based pharmacy chain to open an online store for Maine customers after announcing its launch this week.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the Great British Drugstore opened this week — a reality that was made possible by a controversial Maine law passed last year that allows Mainers to buy medications from online pharmacies in a limited number of countries, including the U.K.

The British pharmacy chain — which is licensed in the U.K. and doesn't require a license in Maine —  touts that its prices are typically 70% lower than in the United States.

But Kenneth McCall, president of the Maine Pharmacy Association, told the BDN that consumers should be skeptical of the website, citing an estimate from the National Association of Pharmacy Boards that 98% of online pharmacies don’t meet U.S. standards.
