FairPoint strike continues for fourth day

Nearly 800 union workers at FairPoint Communications in Maine have been on strike for four days now, saying the company has been unable to negotiate labor contracts.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the strike began at midnight last Thursday and continued into Monday. One union representative said the strike could continue for months.

The unions representing workers claimed to have reached an impasse with FairPoint in labor contract negotiations in August, four months after negotiations began.

They said they disagree with the company's proposal that includes $700 million in contract concessions, including a freeze on contributions for existing pensions and the elimination of pensions for future workers, which the company said would help it stay competitive.

FairPoint has been dispatching replacement workers as part of its contingency plan to continue service in Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire.
