Future of Portland Phoenix up in the air

The sale of the Portland Phoenix weekly newspaper to an employee has fallen through, so the owners are seeking other potential buyers and options.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the attempt by The Phoenix Media/Communications Group to sell the newspaper to an employee failed because of financial reasons, though specifics were not provided.

The parent company of the Portland Phoenix said it's seeking other potential buyers, because it doesn't make sense for the parent company to provide human resources and accounting services for just one newspaper after the Boston Phoenix and the Providence Phoenix both folded over the last year-and-a-half.

John Marshall, the newspaper's manager, told the Press Herald he expected the Portland Phoenix's fate will be decided within the next month or so.
