Westbrook publishing co. to cut workforce in half

Legacy Publishing Co. in Westbrook has told its employees it will be cutting its workforce by Nov. 6 in a “reduction and reorganization” prompted by the company’s decision to stop promoting “The Total Transformation Program” through direct response TV and radio advertisements.

Steve Anderson, the Westbrook company’s founder and CEO, told employees in an open letter that the layoffs are prompted by a shift in the company’s business plan regarding the step-by-step program that is marketed to help parents and grandparents understand and manage difficult children.

“Each year, advertising rates have risen even as audience levels have dropped, as consumers move to on-demand video and audio platforms,” he wrote. “To be even marginally effective in this environment requires an aggressive sales and marketing approach that is in conflict with our future goals for the business. By promoting our products and services via online advertising, publicity and referrals, we will be able to create the customer experience and level of engagement that best fits our brands.”

The Portland Press Herald reported that the layoffs would impact half the workforce. It reported the Westbrook company has employed as many as 175 people but could not determine the current employment level. The newspaper reported that most of the layoffs will take place in the company’s sales and media divisions.

The Maine Department of Labor will be dispatching a rapid response team to help affected workers, the newspaper reported.
